Departments and Centers
IIT Delhi has 13 departments, 11 multi-disciplinary centers, and 2 schools of excellence. Together they offer around 700 courses every semester.[2]
[edit] Departments
IIT Delhi has 13 departments. A department usually focuses on a single engineering or science discipline. Each department has its own administration structure with the Head of the Department (HoD) at the top of it. The HoD heads the department for a period of three years after which a new head is appointed. Each department offers a program (at the undergraduate or post-graduate level), some departments such as Mechanical Engineering Department, offer two or more undergraduate level programs and some departments collaborate with each other to offer a joint program. An example of the latter is the M.Tech in Optical Communications program which is offered by the Department of Physics and Department of Electrical Engineering. The DMS (Department of Management Studies), IIT Delhi came into existence in 1993 by an amendment to IIT(D) statutes. The department offers a two year full time MBA programme with focus on Management Systems, a two year full time MBA with focus on Telecommunication Systems Management and a three year part time MBA programme with focus on Technology Management.
The academic departments in IIT Delhi include the following:
- Applied Mechanics
- Biochemical Engineering & Biotechnology
- Chemical Engineering
- Chemistry
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Science & Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Department of Humanities & Social Science
- Management Studies
- Mathematics
- Mechanical Engineering
- Physics
- Textile Technology
[edit] Inter-disciplinary centers
An inter-disciplinary center defers from a department in the fact that it deals with an overlap of two or more disciplines of engineering or science. Similar to the departments the centers also offer programs though they offer these courses only at the post-graduation level. The following multi-disciplinary centers are located in IIT Delhi:
- Centre for Applied Research in Electronics (CARE)
- Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS)
- Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME)
- Computer Services Centre (CSC)
- Centre for Energy Studies (CES)
- Educational Technology Services Centre (ETSC)
- Industrial Tribology, Machine Dynamics & Maintenance Engineering (ITMMEC)
- Instrument Design Development Centre (IDDC)
- Centre for Polymer Science & Engineering (CPSE)
- Centre for Rural Development & Technology (CRDT)
- National Resource Centre for Value Education in Engineering (NRCVEE)
[edit] Schools of excellence
A school of excellence is an externally funded (either from an alumnus or an organization) school functioning as a part of the institute. There are three such schools in IIT Delhi which are:
- Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology and Management
- Amar Nath & Shashi Khosla School of Information Technology
- School of Biological Sciences
[edit] Academic Programmes
IIT Delhi, like all other Indian Institutes of Technology, is best known for its undergraduate program that include the Bachelor of Technology program , the Dual Degree Bachelor-cum-Master of Technology program and an Integrated Master of Technology Program. It also offers postgraduate level programs like Master of Technology, Master of Science, Master of Science (Research), Master of Business Administration, Master of Design (Industrial Design). Finally it also offers a Ph.D. program. The admission criteria for all these programs is different at the entry level. Throughout its history IIT Delhi has produced outstanding engineers and scientists through these programs.
[edit] Undergraduate Programs
IIT Delhi offers a Bachelor of Technology in 9 different major areas that include Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering (Power), Engineering Physics, Production and Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Textile Technology. The dual degree B.Tech-cum-M.Tech program is offered in Biochemical and Bio-Technology, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering. The integrated M.Tech program is only offered in Mathematics and Computing. The admission to these programs is done through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) which is organized by all the seven Indian Institutes of Technology jointly.
[edit] Post-Graduate Programs
The institute offers post graduate level programs in every department of Engineering that exists in the institute with varied areas of specialization. There are a number of inter-disciplinary programs also available. The list grows so huge that it would be unwise to enumerate it here. The admission criteria for the post graduation programs vary from one program to other and are the subject matter of the concerned department(s).
[edit] Admission Exams
- JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) - For admissions to Under Graduate Programmes (BTech), MSc Integrated Courses, MTech Integrated Courses and Dual Degree MTech programmes.
- GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) - For admissions to Postgraduate Programmes in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science and Pharmacy.
- JMET (Joint Management Entrance Test) - For admissions to PG Degree Programme in Management (MBA).
- JAM (Joint Admission Test) - For admissions to MSc and other post BSc Programmes.
- CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design) - For admissions to Master of Design (MDes) Programmes.

[edit]
Started in February 2009, Technocracy is a students' movement to improve the level of student research and innovation in IIT Delhi.
Main Activities
- Knowledge Management: IIT Delhi Student Project Database’s infrastructure was created by 10 membered team and was presented before IIT Delhi (Head CSC, and Dep. Director). The infrastructure was found to be very sophisticated and team was invited to work in collaboration with CSC, IIT Delhi to implement this system.
- Industry Academia Meet: Promotes student projects in collaboration with industries and is closely monitored by IRD, FITT and Dep. Director of IIT Delhi. A pilot test was run in 2009 and final implementation is in process. Over 50 industries, research labs and technical startups across several research areas have been identified and invited for the meet
- Technical Workshops: Over 30 workshops have been conducted in areas like MATLAB, Web Development, Microprocessors, Robotics Design, Robotics Electronics etc to give hands-on experience on such useful tools. Each workshop is attended on an average of 45-50 students. The workshops are conducted by IIT Delhi students in their final year having substantial experience in the tool they are teaching.
- Interest Group: Technocracy provides a platform which allows people with similar interest to come together, learn from each other and pursue projects in that field.
- Astronomy Club: Started January 2010 and has currently 250 student members including 3 professors from Physics Dept., IIT Delhi. Associations: IAA, Nehru Planetarium
- Economics Club: Started March 2010 and has currently 150 members including 3 professors from Economics Dept., IIT Delhi
- Game Programming Club and Electronics Club will start by end of March 2010
- Umbrella Projects: Technocracy provides a platform for starting interdisciplinary projects of national importance. The first project ‘Border Surveillance’ is in conceptualization phase with 22 students, 5 faculty members and organizations like DRDO.
